WISA® spruce plywood CO₂ emissions in product stage halved – updated EPDs now available

The Environmental Product Declarations, or EPDs, for two WISA® spruce plywood product categories, uncoated and coated spruce plywood, have been updated with impressive improvements in CO₂ emission data in December 2024. In addition, a completely new EPD is now available for treated WISA spruce plywood products.

The national regulations in EU member countries will soon require detailed CO₂ emission reporting, including climate declarations, on all construction projects. WISA plywood products’ third-party-verified Environmental Product Declarations provide industry professionals with the data needed in calculating and reporting emissions and making it easy to compare different materials and products.

In addition to a product’s CO₂ emissions, an EPD covers a wide variety of environmental topics such as  ozone depletion potential, precise information about the materials used in the product, intended applications and reference standards – all based on a life cycle assessment (LCA), which covers a product’s journey from raw materials to disposal, and everything in between.

Updated EPDs support UPM Plywood customers in achieving CO₂ targets, planning and tendering

Uncoated WISA spruce plywood now has a 50%  lower product stage GWP Fossil value (Global Warming Potential Fossil) than in the previous EPD from 2022. The great improvement in the base product, uncoated spruce plywood, automatically benefits the coated and treated spruce plywood products such as WISA®-Spruce FR or WISA®-Spruce BT.

“By choosing a WISA spruce plywood product and having this improved environmental data available, our customers can more easily achieve their CO₂ emission targets. They can also use the data in planning projects, tendering for work and, of course, reporting. The updated EPDs strengthen our customers’ bids and improve their chances of securing projects that prioritize sustainability,” says UPM Plywood Sustainability Manager Jaakko Paloheimo.

The EPD product stage covers the products’ life cycle from cradle to gate. This stage includes activities such as energy production and purchase, raw materials, manufacturing of plywood and internal logistics until the product leaves the site or mill gates.

Committed to continuous environmental improvement

As the construction industry strives for lower CO₂ emissions, UPM Plywood accelerates environmental efforts and transparent documentation to support customers, and the climate.

“The use of the patented WISA BioBond technology in all WISA spruce plywood products and purchase of CO₂- free electricity have significantly reduced our overall fossil-based CO₂ emissions and positively affected our EPD results. The work continues as we steadily move towards our goals in reducing emissions at all possible stages,” describes Jaakko Paloheimo.
