A global leader in sustainability
Putting our goals into action
UPM is a committed supporter of UN Sustainable Development Goals. We have selected eight relevant goals to guide us as we seek to maximise our positive impact and minimise negative outcomes. We have also joined the UN Global Forward Faster Initiative, which calls for the acceleration of progress towards these goals.
Turning words into climate action
Promises and good intentions alone are not enough. Only fast and decisive action will help to mitigate climate change. UPM became one of the first forestry companies to commit to the UN’s Business Ambition for 1.5 °C campaign. We are targeting a 65% reduction in scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030 (baseline: 2015). Our –30 by 30 programme aims to achieve a 30% reduction in scope 3 emissions by 2030 (baseline: 2018).
Forestry for the future
Our business really does grow on trees. As an industry first, the UPM Forest Action programme takes a holistic, global view on the impact of forestry, combining measures on five factors: climate, biodiversity, soil, water and social contribution. And as both a significant forest owner and wood purchaser, we adhere to international principles of sustainable forestry.
Taking product stewardship seriously
As part of our 360-degree approach to safe and sustainable product design, we work hard to minimise the environmental impact of every step in the product lifecycle from raw materials to production to logistics. All of our products are developed to be recyclable at the end of their life cycles.
Safety and human rights
Safety is our top priority. That means continually strengthening a preventive safety culture for our employees, contractors, partners, and suppliers. Our universal respect for human rights across our businesses and value chain is based on UN Guiding Principles. Needless to say, we expect a similar commitment from our partners.
Responsible supply chain
We believe that every choice can help to make a world of difference, so we make no compromises when it comes to responsible supply chain management. For example, the fibres in our products are all traceable to their origin and always sourced from sustainably managed forests. Our commitment to responsible sourcing is written into the UPM Code of Conduct, and we never compromise our standards of integrity.
Transparency on every level
Our operations, our value chain, and our products have all been widely recognised for uncompromising levels of safety and sustainability. We aim to make our work as transparent as possible at every level, so you can trust us to support your own ESG strategy.
